Princeton Rated Best 'National' University

U.S. News & World Report has released their ranking of the best national universities in the county for 2017, and the results should come as no surprise to anyone. Princeton University came away with the #1 spot, beating out #2 Harvard University and #3 University of Chicago. In fact, New Jersey's schools claimed seven of the top 200 spots in the ranking of national colleges. Keep reading to learn more about which schools made the cut.

In addition to its top ranking among national universities, Princeton also ranked #1 in Undergraduate Teaching and #2 in Best Value. For the purposes of the ranking, "national" universities were regarded as those that "offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master's and doctoral programs. These colleges also are committed to producing groundbreaking research."

The seven New Jersey schools which were ranked in the national category were as follows:

1. Princeton University

70. Rutgers University New Brunswick

71. Stevens Institute of Technology (tie)

118. Seton Hall University (tie)

135. New Jersey Institute of Technology (tie)

135. Rutgers University Newark (tie)

176. Montclair State University (tie)

Numerous factors were combined to determine the final ranking, including such variables as graduation and first-year student retention rates, assessment by administrators at peer institutions, faculty resources, student selectivity, and financial resources.
