Princeton Schools Best in NJ, Fifth Nationally

Princeton is known as a bastion of education thanks to its world-famous university, but does that tradition of excellence also pervade the public school district itself? According to's 2016 ranking of the best school districts in the country, the answer is a resounding "YES!" Princeton Public Schools found itself taking the top spot among all districts in New Jersey, and was rated fifth-best in the entire nation! Keep up the good work!

If sounds familiar to you, it may be thanks to one of our blog posts from last year. In August, we wrote about the website's ranking of the best private schools in the country for 2015, in which the Princeton Day School finished 37th overall out of a field of nearly 4,000. While that finish was certainly impressive, the public school system appears to have raised the bar in the newest list for 2016!

In case you don't remember, examines millions of opinions from hundreds of thousands of students and parents in order to find the best schools in the country. To determine their final rankings, they blend these opinions with weighted statistical data, including state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores, teacher quality, and more. In the end, 10,488 school districts were ranked according to their overall rating.

When the dust settled, these ten New Jersey school districts found themselves occupying the top spots in the state:

  1. Princeton Public Schools (5th in U.S.)
  2. Millburn Township Schools (14th in U.S.)
  3. West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District (33rd in U.S.)
  4. Montgomery Township School District (39th in U.S.)
  5. The School District of the Chathams (41st in U.S.)
  6. Summit Public Schools (68th in U.S.)
  7. Ridgewood Public Schools (69th in U.S.)
  8. Pascack Valley Regional High School District (74th in U.S.)
  9. Livingston Public Schools (78th in U.S.)
  10. New Providence School District (81st in U.S.)

Here are the best public school districts in the entire country, according to

  1. Tredyffrin-Easttown School District (Tredyffrin Township, PA)
  2. Eanes Independent School District (Austin, TX)
  3. Jericho Union Free School District (Oyster Bay Town, NY)
  4. New Trier Township High School District No. 203 (New Trier Township, IL)
  5. Princeton Public Schools (Princeton, NJ)
  6. Highland Park Independent School District (Northeast Dallas Township, TX)
  7. North Allegheny School District (McCandless Township, PA)
  8. Rye City School District (Rye, NY)
  9. Indian Hill Exempted Village School District (The Village of Indian Hill, OH)
  10. Glenbrook High Schools District No. 225 (Northfield Township, IL)

The Princeton Public School District received high grades all-around, but it scored top marks (A+) in the "Academics", "Teachers", and "Extracurriculars & Activities" categories. In fact, its lowest grade was only an A- rating, given in the "Student Culture & Diversity" and "Sports & Fitness" categories.
